ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਖਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਇਆ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਣਿ ਸਿਖ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥
hau tudh aakhaa meree kaaeaa toon sun sikh hamaaree |
I say to you, O my body: listen to my advice!
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਚਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਝੂਠੀ ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰੀ ॥
nindaa chindaa kareh paraaee jhootthee laaeitabaaree |
You slander, and then praise others; you indulge in lies and gossip.
ਵੇਲਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਬੁਰਿਆਰੀ ॥
vel paraaee joheh jeearre kareh choree buriaaree |
You gaze upon the wives of others, O my soul; you steal and commit evil deeds.
ਹੰਸੁ ਚਲਿਆ ਤੂੰ ਪਿਛੈ ਰਹੀਏਹਿ ਛੁਟੜਿ ਹੋਈਅਹਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
hans chaliaa toon pichhai raheehi chhuttarr hoeeeh naaree |2|
But when the swan departs, you shall remain behind, like an abandoned woman. ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਕਾਇਆ ਰਹੀਅਹਿ ਸੁਪਨੰਤਰਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥
toon kaaeaa raheeeh supanantar tudh kiaa karam kamaaeaa |
O body, you are living in a dream! What good deeds have you done?
ਕਰਿ ਚੋਰੀ ਮੈ ਜਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਲੀਆ ਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਭਲਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
kar choree mai jaa kichh leea taa man bhalaa bhaaeaa |
When I stole something by deception, then my mind was pleased.
ਹਲਤਿ ਨ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਲਤਿ ਨ ਢੋਈ ਅਹਿਲਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
halat na sobhaa palat na dtoee ahilaa janam gavaaeaa |3|
I have no honor in this world, and I shall find no shelter in the world hereafter. My life has been lost, wasted in vain! ||3||
ਹਉ ਖਰੀ ਦੁਹੇਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਬਾਬਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੇਰੀ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਪੁਛੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hau kharee duhelee hoee baabaa naanak meree baat na puchhai koee |1| rahaau |
I am totally miserable! O Baba Nanak, no one cares for me at all! ||1||Pause||
ਤਾਜੀ ਤੁਰਕੀ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਕਪੜ ਕੇਰੇ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
taajee turakee sueinaa rupaa kaparr kere bhaaraa |
Turkish horses, gold, silver and loads of gorgeous clothes
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਏ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥
kis hee naal na chale naanak jharr jharr pe gavaaraa |
- none of these shall go with you, O Nanak. They are lost and left behind, you fool!
ਕੂਜਾ ਮੇਵਾ ਮੈ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਇਕੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥੪॥
koojaa mevaa mai sabh kichh chaakhiaa ik amrit naam tumaaraa |4|
I have tasted all the sugar candy and sweets, but Your Name alone is Ambrosial Nectar. ||4||
ਦੇ ਦੇ ਨੀਵ ਦਿਵਾਲ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਭਸਮੰਦਰ ਕੀ ਢੇਰੀ ॥
de de neev divaal usaaree bhasamandar kee dteree |
Digging deep foundations, the walls are constructed, but in the end, the buildings return to heaps of dust.
ਸੰਚੇ ਸੰਚਿ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਅੰਧੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭ ਮੇਰੀ ॥
sanche sanch na deee kis hee andh jaanai sabh meree |
People gather and hoard their possessions, and give nothing to anyone else - the poor fools think that everything is theirs.
ਸੋਇਨ ਲੰਕਾ ਸੋਇਨ ਮਾੜੀ ਸੰਪੈ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥੫॥
soein lankaa soein maarree sanpai kisai na keree |5|
Riches do not remain with anyone - not even the golden palaces of Sri Lanka. ||5||
ਸੁਣਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਮੰਨ ਅਜਾਣਾ ॥
sun moorakh man ajaanaa |
Listen, you foolish and ignorant mind
ਹੋਗੁ ਤਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਭਾਣਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hog tisai kaa bhaanaa |1| rahaau |

ਸਾਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਭਾਰਾ ਹਮ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ ॥
saahu hamaaraa tthaakur bhaaraa ham tis ke vanajaare |
My Banker is the Great Lord and Master. I am only His petty merchant.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭ ਰਾਸਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਕੀ ਮਾਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਜੀਵਾਲੇ ॥੬॥੧॥੧੩॥
jeeo pindd sabh raas tisai kee maar aape jeevaale |6|1|13|
This soul and body all are His. He Himself kills, and brings back to life. ||6||1||13||

avar panch ham ek janaa kiau raakhau ghar baar manaa |
There are five of them, but I am all alone. How can I protect my hearth and home, O my mind?
ਮਾਰਹਿ ਲੂਟਹਿ ਨੀਤ ਨੀਤ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਕਰੀ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਜਨਾ ॥੧॥
maareh lootteh neet neet kis aagai karee pukaar janaa |1|
They are beating and plundering me over and over again; unto whom can I complain? ||1||
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਉਚਰੁ ਮਨਾ ॥
sree raam naamaa uchar manaa |
Chant the Name of the Supreme Lord, O my mind.
ਆਗੈ ਜਮ ਦਲੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਘਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aagai jam dal bikham ghanaa |1| rahaau |
Otherwise, in the world hereafter, you will have to face the awesome and cruel army of Death. ||1||Pause||
ਉਸਾਰਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਬੈਠੀ ਸਾ ਧਨਾ ॥
ausaar marrolee raakhai duaaraa bheetar baitthee saa dhanaa |
God has erected the temple of the body; He has placed the nine doors, and the soul-bride sits within.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਅਵਰਿ ਲੁਟੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੨॥
amrit kel kare nit kaaman avar lutten su panch janaa |2|
She enjoys the sweet play again and again, while the five demons are plundering her. ||2||
ਢਾਹਿ ਮੜੋਲੀ ਲੂਟਿਆ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਪਕੜੀ ਏਕ ਜਨਾ ॥
dtaeh marrolee loottiaa dehuraa saa dhan pakarree ek janaa |
In this way, the temple is being demolished; the body is being plundered, and the soul-bride, left all alone, is captured.
ਜਮ ਡੰਡਾ ਗਲਿ ਸੰਗਲੁ ਪੜਿਆ ਭਾਗਿ ਗਏ ਸੇ ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ॥੩॥
jam ddanddaa gal sangal parriaa bhaag ge se panch janaa |3|
Death strikes her down with his rod, the shackles are placed around her neck, and now the five have left. ||3||
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਲੋੜੈ ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਲੁੜੇਨਿ ਸੁ ਖਾਧਾਤਾ ॥
kaaman lorrai sueinaa rupaa mitr lurren su khaadhaataa |
The wife yearns for gold and silver, and her friends, the senses, yearn for good food.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਪ ਕਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਜਾਸੀ ਜਮਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੪॥
naanak paap kare tin kaaran jaasee jamapur baadhaataa |4|2|14|
O Nanak, she commits sins for their sake; she shall go, bound and gagged, to the City of Death. ||4||2||14||

mundraa te ghatt bheetar mundraa kaaneaa keejai khinthaataa |
Let your ear-rings be those ear-rings which pierce deep within your heart. Let your body be your patched coat.
ਪੰਚ ਚੇਲੇ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਜਹਿ ਰਾਵਲ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਕੀਜੈ ਡੰਡਾਤਾ ॥੧॥
panch chele vas keejeh raaval ihu man keejai ddanddaataa |1|
Let the five passions be disciples under your control, O begging Yogi, and make this mind your walking stick. ||1||
ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਇਵ ਪਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥
jog jugat iv paavasitaa |
Thus you shall find the Way of Yoga.
ਏਕੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਹੋਰੁ ਨਾਸਤਿ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲਿ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ek sabad doojaa hor naasat kand mool man laavasitaa |1| rahaau |
There is only the One Word of the Shabad; everything else shall pass away. Let this be the fruits and roots of your mind's diet. ||1||Pause||
ਮੂੰਡਿ ਮੁੰਡਾਇਐ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਮ ਗੁਰੁ ਕੀਨੀ ਗੰਗਾਤਾ ॥
moondd munddaaeiai je gur paaeeai ham gur keenee gangaataa |
Some try to find the Guru by shaving their heads at the Ganges, but I have made the Guru my Ganges.
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਅੰਧਾਤਾ ॥੨॥
tribhavan taaranahaar suaamee ek na chetas andhaataa |2|
The Saving Grace of the three worlds is the One Lord and Master, but those in darkness do not remember Him. ||2||
ਕਰਿ ਪਟੰਬੁ ਗਲੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਵਸਿ ਸੰਸਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਵਸਿਤਾ ॥
kar pattanb galee man laavas sansaa mool na jaavasitaa |
Practicing hypocrisy and attaching your mind to worldly objects, your doubt shall never depart.
