ਜਿਨ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਸਾਦੁ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਗੁੰਗੇ ਮਿਠਿਆਈ ॥
jin chaakhiaa seee saad jaanan jiau gunge mitthiaaee |

Only those who taste it know its sweet taste, like the mute, who eats the candy, and only smiles.

ਅਕਥੈ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਥੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਚਾਲਉ ਸਦਾ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
akathai kaa kiaa katheeai bhaaee chaalau sadaa rajaaee |

How can I describe the indescribable, O Siblings of Destiny? I shall follow His Will forever.

ਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮੇਲੇ ਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਮਤਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥
gur daataa mele taa mat hovai nigure mat na kaaee |

If one meets with the Guru, the Generous Giver, then he understands; those who have no Guru cannot understand this.

ਜਿਉ ਚਲਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਚਾਲਹ ਭਾਈ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਆ ਕੋ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥੬॥
jiau chalaae tiau chaalah bhaaee hor kiaa ko kare chaturaaee |6|

As the Lord causes us to act, so do we act, O Siblings of Destiny. What other clever tricks can anyone try? ||6||

ਇਕਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਇਕਿ ਭਗਤੀ ਰਾਤੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਖੇਲੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
eik bharam bhulaae ik bhagatee raate teraa khel apaaraa |

Some are deluded by doubt, while others are imbued with devotional worship; Your play is infinite and endless.

ਜਿਤੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਲਾਏ ਤੇਹਾ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੂ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
jit tudh laae tehaa fal paaeaa too hukam chalaavanahaaraa |

As You engage them, they receive the fruits of their rewards; You alone are the One who issues Your Commands.

ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੀ ਜੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਅਪਣਾ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥
sevaa karee je kichh hovai apanaa jeeo pindd tumaaraa |

I would serve You, if anything were my own; my soul and body are Yours.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਨੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
satigur miliai kirapaa keenee amrit naam adhaaraa |7|

One who meets with the True Guru, by His Grace, takes the Support of the Ambrosial Naam. ||7||

ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਵਾਸਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਮਹਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨੰ ॥
gaganantar vaasiaa gun paragaasiaa gun meh giaan dhiaanan |

He dwells in the heavenly realms, and his virtues radiantly shine forth; meditation and spiritual wisdom are found in virtue.

ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਤਤੋ ਤਤੁ ਵਖਾਨੰ ॥
naam man bhaavai kahai kahaavai tato tat vakhaanan |

The Naam is pleasing to his mind; he speaks it, and causes others to speak it as well. He speaks the essential essence of wisdom.

ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰਾ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਜਗੁ ਬਉਰਾਨੰ ॥
sabad gur peeraa gahir ganbheeraa bin sabadai jag bauraanan |

The Word of the Shabad is his Guru and spiritual teacher, profound and unfathomable; without the Shabad, the world is insane.

ਪੂਰਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਗੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੰ ॥੮॥੧॥
pooraa bairaagee sehaj subhaagee sach naanak man maanan |8|1|

He is a perfect renunciate, naturally at ease, O Nanak, whose mind is pleased with the True Lord. ||8||1||

ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਤਿਤੁਕੀ ॥
soratth mahalaa 1 titukee |

Sorat'h, First Mehl, Thi-Thukay:

ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਬੰਧਨੀ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਬੰਧਕਾਰੀ ॥
aasaa manasaa bandhanee bhaaee karam dharam bandhakaaree |

Hope and desire are entrapments, O Siblings of Destiny. Religious rituals and ceremonies are traps.

ਪਾਪਿ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ॥
paap pun jag jaaeaa bhaaee binasai naam visaaree |

Because of good and bad deeds, one is born into the world, O Siblings of Destiny; forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he is ruined.

ਇਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਜਗਿ ਮੋਹਣੀ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਸਭੇ ਵੇਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
eih maaeaa jag mohanee bhaaee karam sabhe vekaaree |1|

This Maya is the enticer of the world, O Siblings of Destiny; all such actions are corrupt. ||1||

ਸੁਣਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਾਰੀ ॥
sun panddit karamaa kaaree |

Listen, O ritualistic Pandit:

ਜਿਤੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਸੁ ਆਤਮ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jit karam sukh aoopajai bhaaee su aatam tat beechaaree | rahaau |

that religious ritual which produces happiness, O Siblings of Destiny, is contemplation of the essence of the soul. ||Pause||

ਸਾਸਤੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਬਕੈ ਖੜੋ ਭਾਈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ॥
saasat bed bakai kharro bhaaee karam karahu sansaaree |

You may stand and recite the Shaastras and the Vedas, O Siblings of Destiny, but these are just worldly actions.

ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਚੂਕਈ ਭਾਈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੀ ॥
paakhandd mail na chookee bhaaee antar mail vikaaree |

Filth cannot be washed away by hypocrisy, O Siblings of Destiny; the filth of corruption and sin is within you.

ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਡੂਬੀ ਮਾਕੁਰੀ ਭਾਈ ਊਂਡੀ ਸਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
ein bidh ddoobee maakuree bhaaee aoonddee sir kai bhaaree |2|

This is how the spider is destroyed, O Siblings of Destiny, by falling head-long in its own web. ||2||

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਘਣੀ ਵਿਗੂਤੀ ਭਾਈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਖੁਆਈ ॥
duramat ghanee vigootee bhaaee doojai bhaae khuaaee |

So many are destroyed by their own evil-mindedness, O Siblings of Destiny; in the love of duality, they are ruined.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੈ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥
bin satigur naam na paaeeai bhaaee bin naamai bharam na jaaee |

Without the True Guru, the Name is not obtained, O Siblings of Destiny; without the Name, doubt does not depart.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ਭਾਈ ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਈ ॥੩॥
satigur seve taa sukh paae bhaaee aavan jaan rahaaee |3|

If one serves the True Guru, then he obtains peace, O Siblings of Destiny; his comings and goings are ended. ||3||

ਸਾਚੁ ਸਹਜੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਊਪਜੈ ਭਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
saach sehaj gur te aoopajai bhaaee man niramal saach samaaee |

True celestial peace comes from the Guru, O Siblings of Destiny; the immaculate mind is absorbed into the True Lord.

ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥
gur seve so boojhai bhaaee gur bin mag na paaee |

One who serves the Guru, understands, O Siblings of Destiny; without the Guru, the way is not found.

ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਕਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਭਾਈ ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ॥੪॥
jis antar lobh ki karam kamaavai bhaaee koorr bol bikh khaaee |4|

What can anyone do, with greed within? O Siblings of Destiny, by telling lies, they eat poison. ||4||

ਪੰਡਿਤ ਦਹੀ ਵਿਲੋਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਤਥੁ ॥
panddit dahee viloeeai bhaaee vichahu nikalai tath |

O Pandit, by churning cream, butter is produced.

ਜਲੁ ਮਥੀਐ ਜਲੁ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਏਹਾ ਵਥੁ ॥
jal matheeai jal dekheeai bhaaee ihu jag ehaa vath |

By churning water, you shall only see water, O Siblings of Destiny; this world is like that.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਚੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਉ ਅਲਖੁ ॥੫॥
gur bin bharam vigoocheeai bhaaee ghatt ghatt deo alakh |5|

Without the Guru, he is ruined by doubt, O Siblings of Destiny; the unseen Divine Lord is in each and every heart. ||5||

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਤਾਗੋ ਸੂਤ ਕੋ ਭਾਈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਬਾਧੋ ਮਾਇ ॥
eihu jag taago soot ko bhaaee deh dis baadho maae |

This world is like a thread of cotton, O Siblings of Destiny, which Maya has tied on all ten sides.

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਾਠਿ ਨ ਛੂਟਈ ਭਾਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
bin gur gaatth na chhoottee bhaaee thaake karam kamaae |

Without the Guru, the knots cannot be untied, O Siblings of Destiny; I am so tired of religious rituals.

ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
eihu jag bharam bhulaaeaa bhaaee kahanaa kichhoo na jaae |6|

This world is deluded by doubt, O Siblings of Destiny; no one can say anything about it. ||6||

ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ ਭੈ ਮਰਣਾ ਸਚੁ ਲੇਖੁ ॥
gur miliai bhau man vasai bhaaee bhai maranaa sach lekh |

Meeting with the Guru, the Fear of God comes to abide in the mind; to die in the Fear of God is one's true destiny.

ਮਜਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਭਾਈ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥
majan daan changiaaeea bhaaee daragah naam visekh |

In the Court of the Lord, the Naam is far superior to ritualistic cleansing baths, charity and good deeds, O Siblings of Destiny.
