Soor Chand was the king of Sammar Kand;
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਤੁਲਿ ਨਰੇਸ ਕੋ ਔਰ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥
taa ke tul nares ko aauar jagat mai naeh |1|
there had been none other like him.(1)
ਚਿਤ੍ਰਕਲਾ ਰਾਨੀ ਹੁਤੀ ਬਡਭਾਗਨਿ ਤਿਹ ਠੌਰ ॥
chitrakalaa raanee hutee baddabhaagan tih tthauar |
Chatar Kala was his Rani; she was very fortunate.
ਰੂਪ ਸੀਲ ਲਜਾ ਗੁਨਨ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਤੁਲਿ ਨ ਔਰ ॥੨॥
roop seel lajaa gunan taa ke tul na aauar |2|
In beauty, serenity and modesty no body could beat her.(2)

soee karai ju veh has kahee |
The king always obeyed her and, happily complied with her wishes.
ਆਗ੍ਯਾ ਦੇਸ ਸਕਲ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
aagayaa des sakal tih maanai |
ਰਾਨੀ ਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਪਹਿਚਾਨੈ ॥੩॥
raanee ko raajaa pahichaanai |3|
Even, whole country followed her and the Rani was regarded as the sovereign.(3)

Impressed by her many-fold qualities, her lover accepted her command.
ਨਿਸੁ ਦਿਨ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਰਹੈ ਔਰ ਨ ਹੇਰਤ ਤ੍ਰੀਯ ॥੪॥
nis din grih taa ke rahai aauar na herat treey |4|
Always accepted her faculty and would not heed to any other woman.(4)

ਭੋਗ ਕਰੌ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਥ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
bhog karau tih saath bichaariyo |
Once that sovereign came across another woman and thought of making love with her.
ਰੈਨਿ ਭਈ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਲਖਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
rain bhee jab hee lakh paayo |
ਪਠੈ ਦੂਤ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤਾਹਿ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥੫॥
patthai doot grih taeh bulaayo |5|
When the night approahed he sent an emissary and invited her.(5)
ਤਾ ਸੌ ਬੋਲਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਤਿ ਮਾਨੀ ॥
taa sau bol adhik rat maanee |
ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਰਿ ਅਪਨੀ ਪਹਿਚਾਨੀ ॥
par triy kar apanee pahichaanee |
There, he made love with her considering another person’s woman as his own.
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਚਹਤ ਸਦਨ ਮੈ ਲ੍ਯਾਵੈ ॥
taa kau chehat sadan mai layaavai |
ਨਿਜੁ ਨਾਰੀ ਤੇ ਅਤਿ ਡਰ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
nij naaree te at ddar paavai |6|
He wanted to keep her at home but was afraid of his wife.(6)
ਯਹੈ ਬਾਤ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਮਥਿ ਰਾਖੀ ॥
yahai baat chit mai math raakhee |
ਕੇਲ ਸਮੈ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਯੌ ਭਾਖੀ ॥
kel samai taa sau yau bhaakhee |
Bearing this in mind, while making love he said,
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਬਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੇ ਬਰਿਹੋ ॥
taa kau kahiyo bakatr te bariho |
ਰਾਕਹੁ ਤੇ ਰਾਨੀ ਲੈ ਕਰਿਹੋ ॥੭॥
raakahu te raanee lai kariho |7|
‘I will marry you and, lifting you from poverty, I will make you a Rani.’(7)
ਜਬ ਯੌ ਬਚਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
jab yau bachan triyeh sun paayo |
ਰਾਜ ਹੇਤ ਹਿਯਰੋ ਹੁਲਸਾਯੋ ॥
raaj het hiyaro hulasaayo |
When the woman heard this, she became rapacious,
ਅਬ ਹੌ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਰਹੀ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
ab hau hvai triy rahee tihaare |
ਬਰਿਯੌ ਚਹੋ ਤਬ ਬਰੋ ਪਿਯਾਰੇ ॥੮॥
bariyau chaho tab baro piyaare |8|
And replied, ‘I am yours. You may marry me any time.(8)
ਏਕ ਬਾਤ ਮੈ ਤੁਮੈ ਬਖਾਨੋ ॥
ek baat mai tumai bakhaano |
ਮੇਰੋ ਬਚਨ ਸਾਚ ਜੌ ਮਾਨੋ ॥
mero bachan saach jau maano |
‘But one thing I must say, and please believe it to be true,
ਜੌ ਜੀਯਤ ਲੌ ਨੇਹ ਨਿਬਾਹੋ ॥
jau jeeyat lau neh nibaaho |
ਤੋ ਤੁਮ ਆਜੁ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਬ੍ਰਯਾਹੋ ॥੯॥
to tum aaj nripat muhi brayaaho |9|
‘If you are ready to continue loving me, then you must marry me today.(9)
ਜਾ ਸੋ ਨੇਹੁ ਨੈਕਹੂੰ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
jaa so nehu naikahoon keejai |
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਪੀਠਿ ਜਿਯਤ ਨਹਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
taa kau peetth jiyat neh deejai |
‘The one who adores some one, one must not back out,
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਬਾਹ ਬਿਹਸਿ ਕਰਿ ਗਹਿਯੈ ॥
taa kee baah bihas kar gahiyai |
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਜਾਤ ਲੌ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨਿਬਹਿਯੈ ॥੧੦॥
praan jaat lau preet nibahiyai |10|
even though one may lose ones life.’(10)
ਯਹ ਰਾਨੀ ਜੋ ਧਾਮ ਤਿਹਾਰੈ ॥
yeh raanee jo dhaam tihaarai |
ਤਾ ਕੌ ਡਰ ਹੈ ਹਿਯੈ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
taa kau ddar hai hiyai hamaare |
‘The Rani, you have at home, I am scared of her.
ਤੁਮਹੂੰ ਅਤਿ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਪ੍ਯਾਰੇ ॥
tumahoon at taa ke bas payaare |
ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਤੰਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੇ ਮਾਰੇ ॥੧੧॥
jantr mantr tantran ke maare |11|
‘With magical spell you are under her control.(11)
ਹੌ ਅਬ ਏਕ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਨਾਊ ॥
hau ab ek charitr banaaoo |
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤੁਮ ਸੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਪਾਊ ॥
jaa te tum se nrip ko paaoo |
‘Now I will show you a miracle, through which I could be a sovereign like you.
ਸਕਲ ਸਤੀ ਕੋ ਸਾਜ ਸਵਰਿਹੌ ॥
sakal satee ko saaj savarihau |
ਅਰੁਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਅੰਗਨ ਮੈ ਕਰਿਹੌ ॥੧੨॥
arun basatr angan mai karihau |12|
‘I will disguise as a Sati (the one who immolates her self with the dead body of her husband) and put on red clothes.(12)
ਤੁਮ ਤਹ ਇਹ ਰਾਨੀ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਕੈ ॥
tum teh ih raanee sang lai kai |
ਐਯਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਚਿੰਡੋਲ ਚੜੈ ਕੈ ॥
aiyahu aap chinddol charrai kai |
ਤੁਮਹੂੰ ਆਪੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਮਝੈਯਹੁ ॥
tumahoon aap mohi samajhaiyahu |
ਰਾਨੀ ਕੌ ਮਮ ਤੀਰ ਪਠੈਯਹੁ ॥੧੩॥
raanee kau mam teer patthaiyahu |13|
ਕਹਬੇ ਹੁਤੀ ਸਕਲ ਤਿਨ ਭਾਖੀ ॥
kahabe hutee sakal tin bhaakhee |
ਸੋ ਸਭ ਰਾਇ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਰਾਖੀ ॥
so sabh raae chit mai raakhee |
‘With the Rani accompanying you, and sitting in a palanquin, you Come to that place (where pyre will be ready).
ਨਿਸੁਪਤਿ ਛਪਿਯੋ ਦਿਨਿਸਿ ਚੜਿ ਆਯੋ ॥
nisupat chhapiyo dinis charr aayo |
ਬਾਮ ਸਤੀ ਕੋ ਭੇਸ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥੧੪॥
baam satee ko bhes banaayo |14|
‘You come to me to dissuade me and then send Rani towards me.’(14)
ਦਿਨ ਭੇ ਚਲੀ ਸਤੀ ਹਠ ਕੈ ਕੈ ॥
din bhe chalee satee hatth kai kai |
ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਸਭਹਿਨ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਕੈ ॥
aooch neech sabhahin sang lai kai |
When the day broke she marched (towards the pyre) and all, the rich and the poor, followed.
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸਹਿਤ ਰਾਜ ਹੂੰ ਆਯੋ ॥
triy sahit raaj hoon aayo |
ਆਨਿ ਸਤੀ ਕੋ ਸੀਸ ਝੁਕਾਯੋ ॥੧੫॥
aan satee ko sees jhukaayo |15|
The Raja, along with Rani, came and stood before her hanging his head.(15)
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤਿਹ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸਤੀ ਨਹਿ ਹੂਜੈ ॥
nrip tih kahiyo satee neh hoojai |
ਮੋ ਤੈ ਅਮਿਤ ਦਰਬੁ ਕ੍ਯੋ ਨ ਲੀਜੈ ॥
mo tai amit darab kayo na leejai |
Raja requested her not become Sati and take as much wealth from him as she wished.
ਹੇ ਰਾਨੀ ਤੁਮਹੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਵੋ ॥
he raanee tumahoon samajhaavo |
ਜਰਤ ਅਗਨ ਤੇ ਯਾਹਿ ਬਚਾਵੋ ॥੧੬॥
jarat agan te yaeh bachaavo |16|
(He asked his Rani) ‘Rani, you make her to understand and save her from burning in the fire.’(16)
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਾਨੀ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਸਮਝਾਯੋ ॥
nrip raanee taa kau samajhaayo |
ਬਿਹਸਿ ਸਤੀ ਯੌ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
bihas satee yau bachan sunaayo |
When Rani and Raja tried her to understand, then she replied, ‘Listen
ਯਹ ਧਨ ਹੈ ਕਿਹ ਕਾਜ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
yeh dhan hai kih kaaj hamaare |
ਸੁਨੋ ਰਾਵ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਕਹੌ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ॥੧੭॥
suno raav prat kahau tihaare |17|
my Raja, with love I say, what good is this wealth for me.(17)

ਸੁਨੁ ਰਾਨੀ ਤੋ ਸੌ ਕਹੌ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨੋ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ॥

‘Listen, my Rani and Raja, I am relinquishing my life for sake of my beloved.
ਪਿਯ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਿਯ ਮੈ ਤਜੌ ਯਹ ਧਨ ਹੈ ਕਿਹ ਕਾਜ ॥੧੮॥
piy kaaran jiy mai tajau yeh dhan hai kih kaaj |18|
‘What will I do with this wealth ?’(18)
ਪਰ ਧਨ ਗਨੌ ਪਖਾਨ ਸੋ ਪਰ ਪਤਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਮਾਨ ॥
par dhan ganau pakhaan so par pat pitaa samaan |
‘Another person’s property is like a stone and another person’s husband like father.
ਪਿਯ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਿਯ ਮੈ ਤਜੌ ਸੁਰਪੁਰ ਕਰੌ ਪਯਾਨ ॥੧੯॥
piy kaaran jiy mai tajau surapur karau payaan |19|
‘Sacrificing my life for my beloved, I am destined for heaven.’(19)
